Dam feedback looks familiar

Arguments raised the last time dams were proposed for the Clutha River are being raised again as Contact Energy seeks public feedback on plans for up to four hydro developments along the river.
Contact Energy recently confirmed it wants to consult the public for the next year about the possibility of building dams at Queensberry, Luggate, Beaumont and Tuapeka Mouth.
A website, offering the public the chance to have its say through an internet forum, has generated about 60 responses.
Most respondents seem to oppose any more dams on the river and a recurring theme is the similarity of concerns in 2009 compared to those raised by dam opponents when the plans were first mooted decades ago.
Issues about land ownership, the protection of Birch Island and the environmental impact of dams are common comments posted on the forum which is regularly monitored by Contact.
The company's hydro project manager, Neil Gillespie, responds to questions and concerns.
A. Pesron asked what was Contact's logic for rolling out plans from about 50 years ago and then trying to sell them to the New Zealand public.
"Large dams cause damage to the environment. I will not even list the environmental costs, because you are aware of them."
In his response, Mr Gillespie, who goes by the name "Avatar" in the forum, said while the plans were first developed some time ago, they represent some of the very best hydro options in the country.
Another submitter, "fleuve", expresses concern about the potential loss of Birch Island, downstream from Beaumont.
The submitters says the 6ha island is protected because of its significant conservation value.
The same person also claims the Rongahere war memorial and "countless unique types of flora and fauna" would be flooded if the Tuapeka Mouth project went ahead.
"Would you explain how Contact, as an international corporate, will justify these tangible environmental and sensitive losses to New Zealanders if you decide to go for the Tuapeka Mouth option?
"Mr Gillespie had yet to respond to that question when the Otago Daily Times checked the website yesterday afternoon.
The "real paradise" of Central Otago would be ruined if dams were built on the river, Will and Joy Harvey wrote.
While Contact, politicians and certain business interests want significant development and growth, they said many people live in that area for the lifestyle and associated natural features of the land.
The question of how much land Contact needs for the dams and how it will get around securing land that owners do not want to part with was also raised in another forum.
Mr Gillespie said the Tuapeka project would create a 3400ha lake.
Contact owns about 4000ha in the area but not all of that land is needed for the scheme.
The Beaumont lake would be about 620ha in size.
Contact was getting aerial photography and survey work done to work out exactly how much land would be flooded by all the schemes.
Details would be posted on the website once they were available, he said.
