Beaumont group to fight again

The Friends of Beaumont group is reforming to oppose Contact Energy's newly released hydro plans.
Contact released four possible projects for hydro-electric dams on the Clutha River this week. They are at Luggate (86MW), Queensberry (160MW), Beaumont (185MW) and Tuapeka (350MW).
The company has outlined the four options on its website and is seeking community feedback.
Friends of Beaumont formed in 1994 and fulfilled its purpose of stopping the Tuapeka dam project.
Secretary Trevor Reeves said the group was disappointed it would have to go "all over it again".
The group was looking to join forces with other groups like the Clutha Guardians and the Clutha River Group to jointly oppose the plans.
Mr Reeves said the Tuapeka project, which would inundate Beaumont township, could not go ahead because it would flood the Beaumont cemetery, which was prohibited under the Resource Management Act.
"That's how we stopped them last time," he said.
There were still a lot of people against dam projects, particularly in Beaumont.
"We're going to make it real tough for them," he said.
A proposed walkway between Beaumont and Roxburgh would have to be ditched, he said.
Fruit growers and wineries would be affected by the Queensbury and Luggate proposals.
"It's a waste of land. Once it's flooded, it's gone forever," he said.
Beaumont resident group member Leigh Morris said the proposals "stink".
He grew up in Beaumont and his property was one of 28 in Beaumont township under threat by the Tuapeka proposal.
"I'll be putting as much opposition to this as I can," he said.
The sections of the river needed to be preserved for recreational users. Otago did not need another lake, he said.
"This is our backyard and we can't let it get stuffed up," Mr Morris said.
Contact's website says large pieces of land will be flooded, homes, businesses and heritage sites will have to be relocated and recreation activities will be changed.
It says the benefits are likely to be major investment, growth, employment and the creation of recreational amenities. Following public consultation the company expected to announce a preferred option for in-depth investigation next year. It would then lodge a resource consent application.
Construction could start between 2015 and 2025, it says.
Contact's hydro development manager Neil Gillespie said he welcomed opposition groups bringing issues to the fore.
"We want to hear people's responses to these schemes and hydro generation in general, good and bad. There are two sides of the coin and we want to hear all sides so we are as informed as we can be," Mr Gillespie said.
He was unaware flooding cemeteries was against the Resource Management Act.
"It is an issue we will have to work through and there are processes to go through," he said.
