For some time now, we know that Contact Energy - who already operate two hydro-electric dams on the Clutha Mata-Au River, have been re-assessing the Luggate and Queensberry schemes of the 1980's. These dams would flood the Upper Clutha Mata-Au below the Cardrona River confluence at Albert Town, forming two resevoirs extending almost to the Dunstan reservoir above the Clyde dam.
A consent was actually obtained in the 1980's to build the Luggate dam, but it expired in 2001. Controversy over the hugely expensive and bitterly debated Clyde dam, the flooding of Alexandra in 1999 due to siltation behind the old Roxburgh dam (built in 1956), and more dissent over the proposed Beaumont dam, saw the Government and Contact Energy (formerly ECNZ) cool their heels for a while.
But the dam builders are now talking about re-packaging these old schemes, and those of us who work to protect and improve this magnificent river would be wise not to under-estimate Contact Energy.
The Roxburgh and Cromwell Gorges have already been taken from us. The Roxburgh 'Rapids', the Cromwell 'Gap' and the wonder that was the 'Junction' have already been destroyed. They have taken the best, and the best that remains is the Upper Clutha Mata-Au. There is no need to take it all ...
